Created and finished by Philip Gay in his studio in West London.

A unique jewellery box, built as a one off piece. It was important that your eye was drawn upwards, hence the raised quadrants on the lid. The concave sides amplify this idea, slimming the bulk of the box and guiding your gaze upwards. Once opened the contrasting colours of the parquetry are continued, with the use of a soft cream leather lining. Culminating in a tactile object that invites itself to be picked up.

It was important to create a piece that didn't feel grounded to the surface it sat on and instead encourage the piece to be picked up, explored and not left static in a room.

Made from Pau Ferro, Black bog oak, Holly and Leather. The timbers have been shaped using a a mixture of handtools and power tools, embracing modern technology such as laser cutters where needed. Careful planning was needed when cutting the box sides, to maintain the flow of figure around the whole box. The bog oak veneer had to be ebonised to match the natural black of the solid timber, the blackest part of the tree being on the outside. Finished in a satin finish osmo oil.

Philip was a winner of the AUTHOR's Choice award at the New Designers Selects show in Summer 2024. ND Selects is a curated space at New Designers dedicated to shine a light on new businesses in the design industry. Philip's products are featured on the AUTHOR website on a not-for-profit basis.

Time to make: 170hrs - approx 4 weeks
Approximate delivery: 2 weeks if in stock. 6-8 weeks if made to order.

Standard Delivery - is for items that are small/light in weight, delivery is £7 and should be with you in five to seven working days. If a piece is needed urgently don’t hesitate to get in touch as we may be able to fulfil your wishes using an express service at an extra charge.

Specialist Delivery - is for items that are too large/heavy/fragile to be sent in a parcel. As soon as your order has been received our customer service team will be in contact thanking you for your order and providing an accurate lead time. A shipping invoice will then be emailed to you requiring payment prior to despatch. Be assured, AUTHOR have negotiated competitive shipping costs from reliable couriers.
