Richard Ballantyne

Raku Hen by Richard Ballantyne for AUTHOR's unique collections of British-made home accessories

Regular price £125 Sale

Beautifully handmade by Richard Ballantyne in his Buckinghamshire based studio.

Hand built from clay and then raku fired to create the gorgeous crackly pattern. As each is made individually, they all have their own unique character.

We also have mischievous fox heads available here which may explain the grumpy expression of some of the hens.

Why we love this product

Delightful farmyard friends to sprinkle (or peck) some joy

Richard has the wonderful ability to capture the personalities of animals perfectly in his work and these hens are no exception. You can almost hear them clucking and ruffling their feathers as they perch perfectly on your bookcase, shelf or mantlepiece.

Just like the Raku Hares and Raku Leverets, the beautiful, sporadic, crackly pattern on these hens is created by the use of the Raku firing technique which sees the pieces removed from the kiln and cooled down to 800 degrees and then put into a mixture of sawdust or paper to create the exquisite crackled pattern.

These gorgeous hens make exquisite gifts as they are all handmade individually and so no two are the same.
