Wayne Galloway

Smoke Fired Textured Sea Orb by Wayne Galloway Ceramics for AUTHOR's collection of British-made home decor

Regular price £65 Sale

Hand crafted by ceramist Wayne Galloway in his Fife-based studio in Scotland.

This piece has been thrown on the potters wheel and carefully burnished with a beach pebble to create a sealed surface. Several coats of Terra Sigillata are applied and then further buffing takes place, resulting in a mirror shine on the clay. The piece is then fired in Wayne's electric kiln. After this, Wayne takes the piece to Cambo Estate in Fife, where it is smoke-fired with locally collected materials including seed heads, grasses, seaweed and pinecones. Sawdust, provided by Anstruther Fisheries Museum boatyard, is packed around the piece. As the fire burns around the pot, unique markings adorn the surface. The results are unpredictable and beautiful making each orb unique and individual.

Why we love this product

Individual and unique, no one is the same

These beautiful pieces by Wayne Galloway Ceramics are inspired by the geology and soils which surround the coastal village of Crail in Scotland where Wayne is based. These pieces explore texture especially with the contrast of the tactile, cracked external surface and the smooth top and base. Terra Sigillata was used by ancient civilisations to seal their pots. It completely transforms the clay and produces and beautifully smooth, shiny surface that you see on the top and base. This comparison of textures is pleasingly to the hand and eye.

As these pieces are smoke fired, each has a different, unique and sporadic pattern making them truly one of a kind. Bespoke sizes can be made.
