Wayne Galloway

Smoke Fired Calm Sea Orb by Wayne Galloway Ceramics for AUTHOR's collection of unique British-made home decor

Regular price £65 Sale

Hand crafted by ceramist Wayne Galloway in his Fife-based studio in Scotland.

This piece has been thrown on the potters' wheel and carefully burnished with a beach pebble to create a sealed surface. Several coats of Terra Sigillata are applied and then further buffing takes place, resulting in a mirror shine on the clay. The piece is then fired in Wayne's electric kiln. After this, Wayne takes the piece to Cambo Estate in Fife, where it is smoke fired with locally collected materials including seed heads, grasses, seaweed and pinecones. Sawdust, provided by Anstruther Fisheries Museum boatyard, is packed around the piece. As the fire burns around the pot, unique markings adorn the surface. The results are unpredictable, unique and beautiful creating one-of-a-kind pieces.

Why we love this product

Like a beautiful pebble from a moody British shore

These stunning smoke fired pieces by Wayne Galloway are inspired by the surrounding landscape, geology and natural textures found around the coastal town of Crail in Fife, Scotland where Wayne is based. Terra Sigillata was used by ancient civilisations to seal their pots. It completely transforms the clay and produces and beautifully smooth, shiny surface. These gorgeous pieces stir up memories of beach-combing as a child and finding the best pebble to skim the water with. The smooth exterior is pleasing to the eye and touch. As these pieces are smoke fired, the surface pattern is sporadic and unique making these truly individual ceramic pieces.
